One of the greatest and most successful professional golfers of all time, Thomas Sturges Watson of Mission Hills, Kansas was named the Professional Golfers Association Player of the Year six times: 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982, and 1984. He was a five-time winner of the British Open (1975, 1977, 1980, 1982, and 1983), two-time winner of The Masters (1977 and 1981) and he won the U.S. Open title in 1982. In 1980, Watson became the first professional golfer to earn more than $500,000 in one season. Winner of over 40 PGA Tour and international tournaments, he was a four-time member of the United States Ryder Cup team and captain of the 1993 team. Before turning professional in 1971, he won the Missouri amateur Golf championship four times. Watson won his first professional tour title at the Western Open in 1974.
