OUR MISSION
The mission of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame is to honor those who have contributed to the history of sports in Kansas and to educate and inspire the public regarding the value of athletics and Kansas athletic history by providing the requisite leadership and resources.

HISTORY
The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame (KSHOF) was established in 1961 by the Kansas State Legislature as part of the state's Centennial Celebration. Its mission is to honor individuals who have significantly contributed to Kansas's rich sports history and to educate and inspire the public about the value of athletics and the state's athletic heritage.

The inaugural class of inductees in 1961 included notable figures such as Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball; Mike Ahearn, a prominent Kansas State coach and administrator; Olympic runner Glenn Cunningham; baseball legend Walter Johnson; and heavyweight boxing champion Jess Willard.

Over the years, the Hall of Fame has been housed in various locations. In 2009, it moved to the historic Wichita Boathouse at 515 S. Wichita Street in Wichita, Kansas. This relocation included an agreement with philanthropist Bill Koch, whose 1992 America's Cup-winning yacht, America³, is on display there.

The museum features exhibits, archives, and interactive displays that celebrate Kansas's sports heritage. It highlights the achievements of athletes and coaches across various sports, including football, basketball, baseball, track and field, and more. Notable inductees include NFL stars Gale Sayers, Barry Sanders and John Riggins, basketball legends Wilt Chamberlain and Lynette Woodard, and coaches including Dean Smith, Bill Snyder and pioneering football coach Willie Jeffries, the first African American head football coach at the NCAA Division I level .

As of 2025, the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame has inducted 349 individuals, reflecting the state's diverse and storied athletic history. The museum is currently open by appointment only. For more information or to schedule a visit, you can contact Richard Konzem via email at richard@kshof.org .
