Robert Gilchrist “Bobby” Douglass was one of the greatest football players in University of Kansas history. The powerfully-built Douglass – 6-foot-3, 215 pounds – was a first-team all-state quarterback at El Dorado High School in 1964 and later helped lead the Kansas Jayhawks to a 9-2 record and a share of the Big Eight Conference championship in 1968, as well as a second-place finish one year earlier. He was a consensus first-team All-American as a senior as the Jayhawks played in the Orange Bowl for the first time in over two decades. Douglass, who engineered back-to-back wins over Nebraska in ’67 and ’68, finished his college career with 2,817 yards passing and over 1,000 yards rushing as the Jayhawks used the quarterback sweep as a very productive offensive play. After his senior year, Douglass played in the Senior Bowl, American Bowl (MVP) and College All-Star Game. He was drafted in the first round of the 1968 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears and spent 13 seasons in the National Football League with Chicago, San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers. His most productive season came in 1972 when he passed for 1,246 yards and rushed for 968 for the Bears. Douglass’ name and number are emblazoned in the north bowl of KU’s Memorial Stadium in honor of his All-American honors. Born: June 22, 1947 – Manhattan, KS.
