Xavier Maurice McDaniel was the first player in college basketball history to lead the nation in both scoring and rebounding during the same season. A powerfully-built 6-foot-7 forward, the X-Man accomplished that feat during his senior season at Wichita State in 1984-85 when he averaged 27.2 points and 14.8 rebounds per game. McDaniel was a two-time player of the year in the Missouri Valley Conference and a first-team All-American in 1985. He finished his four-year career at Wichita State with 2,152 points (second all-time) and 1,349 rebounds (No. 1) and also led the nation in rebounding during the 1982-83 season as a sophomore. He came to Wichita with an attitude and determination that would eventually make him one of the greatest players in WSU history. McDaniel was selected in the first round (fourth overall) of the 1985 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics and proceeded to earn NBA All-Rookie honors as well as being named co-rookie of the year with Patrick Ewing. He played in the NBA for 12 seasons with Seattle, Phoenix, New York, Boston and New Jersey before retiring in 1998. McDaniel averaged 15.6 points and 6.1 rebounds for his career and was selected to play in the 1988 NBA All-Star Game and was regarded as one of the toughest, strongest, and most colorful players in the league. Before attending Wichita State, McDaniel led AC Flora High School (Columbia, S.C.) to the 1981 state championship. He is a member of the Wichita State Hall of Fame.
