One of the best golfers ever produced by the state of Kansas, Grier Jones starred at the amateur, collegiate and professional level before becoming a highly-successful college coach. Jones was a two-time high school state champion at Wichita’s Kapaun Mt. Carmel before earning All-American honors at Oklahoma State University. He won the 1966 Kansas Amateur championship in Topeka and Big Eight Conference titles in 1967 and ’68. During the 1967 U.S. Amateur, Jones finished ahead of such players as Tom Watson and Johnny Miller. As a senior at Oklahoma State, Jones won medalist honors at the NCAA Championships in Las Cruces, N.M. He joined the PGA Tour in 1969 and was named the Rookie of the Year. He finished fourth in the PGA’s money list in 1972 and ended his career with 54 top-10 finishes and three tournament championships. He also competed in the U.S. Open four times and the PGA Championship nine times. Jones was named the head coach at Wichita State in 1995 and his teams won nine conference titles during an 11-year stretch. He was also named the MVC Coach of the Year four times from 1998-2006. Jones also assisted in designing Terradyne Country Club in Andover and was the head pro at the course. He was named the Kansas Chapter PGA Teacher of the Year in 1995.
