One of the most successful high school football coaches in the nation, Ed Buller compiled a record of 335 victories against just 78 losses and 7 ties in his 45 years of coaching in Kansas. He was the architect of the single-wing offense which helped him win 24 league championships with ten undefeated teams for Clyde High School. Ranked among the nation’s top 10 prep coaches in career wins, Buller began his career at Bucklin in 1940, where his first team finished the season undefeated. Buller then moved to Agenda where he served as head coach for four seasons before taking over at Clyde in 1945. In his 40 years at Clyde and later Clifton-Clyde, his teams suffered only one losing season – his first. After that, Buller’s Bluejays dominated their opponents with the single-wing, spinner back offense which baffled tacklers and built Clyde into a dynasty which completed 39 consecutive winning seasons. Known as a hard-working, fundamentals genius, Buller emphasized blocking and tackling throughout his career which ended in 1984. One of his 1950’s Clyde teams finished undefeated and unscored upon and in 1977, Clyde was the undefeated 1A state champion. Like his victory total, Buller’s all-time winning percentage of 80.6 ranks among the best in the nation. Selected Kansas Coach of the Year in 1978 and runner-up for National Coach of the Year honors in 1980, he was inducted into the K.S.H.S.A.A. Hall of Fame in 1986. Fittingly, the football field at Clifton-Clyde High School bears his name. Born January 29, 1917 – Inman, Kansas. Died January 30, 2008. Graduated Inman (KS) H.S., 1936; Kansas State University, 1940.
