They called him “Dave the Rave” and Wichita State University basketball followers are still raving about the school’s first consensus All-American, Dave Stallworth. The 6’-7” Stallworth led the Shockers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1964 and the first number-one national ranking in school history. When the two-time All-American graduated, he held 18 school records even though he only played three seasons. His career scoring average of 24.2 points per game still stands as the WSU record. In what some consider his greatest performance, he scored the last seven points in WSU’s game against top-ranked Cincinnati, leading the Shockers to a 65-64 victory. Stallworth finished the game with a school record 46 points. The next year against Cincinnati, Stallworth scored four straight points, made a steal and had an assist in the last 29 seconds to boost Wichita to a 62-59 win. He scored a total of 95 points in his last two games before his eligibility expired in January of 1965. Stallworth was the first Shocker to have his jersey retired by WSU. A first-round draft pick of the New York Knicks, Stallworth played with three NBA teams during his 10-year career and was a member of the 1969-70 Knicks team that won the NBA title as world champions.
