Legendary coach who made “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not” as the only person to coach at two different major colleges at the same time – head basketball coach at Brown University and football coach at Dickinson College (Carlisle, PA.). Kahler, known affectionately as the “Ox” played on the 1918 state championship basketball team for Arkansas City (KS) High School. He earned 12 varsity letters at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas and was an All – Kansas center in basketball three times and All – American twice. Kahler coached football, basketball and track at Kansas high schools in Lyons and Coffeyville as well as Sterling (KS) college. His 1937 football team at Dickinson (PA) College was unbeaten, the first time that had ever happened. He was named “Who’s Who” in Pennsylvania in 1939 before entering the armed services. Following service in the United States Navy (1942–46), he was athletic director and coach at Southwestern College, and had won–loss records of 143–35–8 in football, 175–60 in basketball and 94–12 in dual track and field meets. His 1946 football team won the only CIC championship in school history. Born December 27, 1897 – Arkansas City, Kansas. Died April 23, 1982 – Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Graduated Arkansas City (KS) H.S., 1919; Southwestern (KS) college 1923.
