Player Reunion at the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame!

The Kansas Sports Hall of Fame is proud to announce it will be hosting the 1989 Wichita State Baseball National Championship Player Reunion meet and greet on Sunday, October 26, 2014, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, located at the Wichita Boathouse at 515 S. Wichita, Wichita, KS 67202. Players and coaches from the 1989 National Championship baseball team will be on hand to relive the magic moments of the 1989 season and the public is invited to help celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Wichita State Baseball’s National Championship. Admission to the event is free to the public. Tax-deductible donations will be taken at the door to benefit the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

The event kicks off with a press conference for the media beginning at 1:30 pm on Sunday, October 26th, at the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. Players and coaches will be available for questions from the media during this time.

The event will open to the public at 2:00 pm. Admission to the event is free. Following introductions of players and coaches, the 1989 National Championship game will be shown. The meet and greet event will feature interviews with the players and coaches as the game is being watched on the projection screen. The event will end at 5:00 pm.

Gene Stephenson, a 2014 Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Inductee, along with many players from the 1989 team will be in attendance, including Eric Wedge, Greg Brummett, Jeff Bluma, Todd Dreifort, Charlie Giaudrone, Mike McDonald, Jim Audley, Jeff Bonacquista, Brian Buzard, Pat Cedeno, P.J. Forbes, Mike Lansing, Morgan LeClair, Jim Newlin, Darrin Paxton, Jeff Williams, and many more. Shocker players from other eras will also be in attendance, including emcee for the event Shane Dennis, host of the Shane Dennis Show weekdays from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on KFH 1240 AM/98.7 FM.

The 1989 Wichita State Baseball team posted a 68-16 record on their way to winning the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title and the National Championship. It was the third College World Series appearance under Gene Stephenson at Wichita State and the Shockers entered Omaha as the #4 seed in the tournament. Following a loss in their second game to overall #1 seed Florida State, the Shockers reeled off four straight victories to close out the season and clinched the National Championship by beating the University of Texas in the Championship game. Six Shockers were named to the College World Series All-Tournament Team, including All-American catcher Eric Wedge, pitchers Greg Brummett and Jim Newlin, shortstop Pat Meares, and outfielders Jim Audley and Todd Dreifort.
